The lesson this week invites us to look at creation not only as an initial event but also as an event that has implications for all history making it a biblical theme that can be traced through the rest of scripture. If creation and creatorship is not just found in the first couple of chapters of Genesis but can be found all the way through the Bible right up to Revelation, we will have to consider the broader possible meanings of this theme. It should be understood to be playing a big role in the history of earth and also illuminate some of God’s intentions.

We can review a host of passages in our pursuit of the plan outlined just above, but, in order to get the gist of this, we will suggest the following verses (there are certainly more):

  • Genesis 2 – this chapter contains the story of the creation of Adam and Eve in more detail than will be found in Chapter 1. Were this a lesson on human dynamics and relationships, there would be a lot to talk about from this chapter but let it be enough that we notice the theme of creation is in the second book of the Bible as well as the first one.
  • Corinthians 4:6 – notice that this verse has an allusion to creation more than it has a direct discussion of it “For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness…”
  • Hebrews 4:4 -there is here mention of the seventh day as being connected to God resting from all His works then.”
  • Matthew 19:4-6 – here is an appeal to creation in the midst of the divorce discussion Jesus had with the Pharisees. In this instance, Jesus used the creation story to establish the parameters of marriage and divorce.
  • Psalm 8 -this whole Psalm should be read in class and discussed for it is one of the
  • Psalms that extolls the creative power and the majesty of God as it is exhibited in creation.
  • Psalm 104 – Notice how this Psalm praises God for His goodness in both creation and providence
  • Other Psalms that could be used are: Psa. 24:1,2, Psa. 33:6, Psa. 74:16,17,Psa. 89:11.
  • Job 38:1-21 – here is some magnificent thought on God and creation though it is from an angle somewhat different from the one in Genesis.
  • Isa 45:18-this is a bona fide creation text!
  • Acts 17:22-31 – Paul argues with the pagan philosophers and alludes to creation.
  • Revelation 4:11,10:5,6, and Revelation 14:6,7 all tell of creation.

QUESTIONS:

  • What happens to the reality-picture of the Bible if you do away with creation?
  • What are some of the implications that might accrue to humans in view of the creatorship of God.
